Anthony, Jacob & Oscar’s Syndicate

Who are we?

Hi there - we’re Anthony Collias, Jacob Wedderburn-Day and Oscar Thanoyannis.

We run Stasher.com and Treepoints. Anthony and Jacob founded Stasher in 2015, upon graduating from Oxford University, and Oscar joined as Head of Sales in 2018. Stasher is an international travel tech startup, VC-backed having raised over $5m, present in over 300 cities worldwide. Treepoints is a climate social enterprise founded in 2020, helping businesses to operate sustainably.

Why are we running this?

Our experience running both startups have taught us a lot about what makes a good business. Since we’ve been active in the London startup scene for over 7 years, we’ve come to meet a lot of great founders, who share their decks with us.

We set up this syndicate for 2 reasons:

  1. We want to support these founders with access to capital (and, where relevant, what we’ve learned from our own experience).

  2. We want to make angel investing into otherwise private deals accessible for more people, particularly S/EIS deals. The immense tax benefits of these investment schemes isn’t understood by enough people.

What you will get?

Whenever we encounter an opportunity we want to invest in, we will share the details with our community via this mailing list. This will include all key facts, deal terms and some commentary based on our opinions, plus a form if you are interested in participating in the deals.

If you choose to invest in any of the deals we present, we will structure a simple legal vehicle to pool all the money together (Special Purpose Vehicle), using our friends Odin. Their mission is to make launching and investing in syndicates cheaper and easier than ever before. There is a small legal fee associated with setting up an investment, which we split pro rata among participating investors and in most cases with the investee; plus a 10% carry on profits generated. There is no membership fee and no management fees on the capital.

What sort of deals should you expect?

As active participants in a few different cross-sections of the startup scene, we have natural access to dealflow, so we’ll consider and present a variety of options. Rather than having a specific thesis (e.g. marketplace / fintech etc), our focus is going to be on founders and ideas that we personally resonate with. Based on the sort of dealflow we have seen over the last year, this can range from deep-tech series A opportunities in the USA, to a £150k SEIS round into a fintech by recent UK graduates, to EIS seed rounds in established e-commerce plays. Whilst we will of course consider high-risk, high-return “moonshot” opportunities, we also like deals that sit in a sweet spot that provides great returns for angel investors (particularly with S/EIS), without necessarily being a typical venture capital opportunity. Companies with high growth potential and exit opportunities in the £10m-£100m range are life changing for founders and still represent a great investment for angels.
